West Willow

The West Willow Tool Lending Library is complete and open for lending to West Willow residents! This would not have been possible without the many partners who helped with funding, volunteers, and support along the way.

Wells Fargo volunteers helped three Veteran homeowners in West Willow beautify their homes by cleaning gutters, installing gutter guards, building a handrail, painting and staining, removing a clothes line pole in concrete, installing downspout extensions and splash blocks, brush removal, and landscaping. We cleared a forest of shrubs, trees, and weeds from Mr. Paulson’s back yard and landscaped his front yard

Jo Ann from the New West Willow Neighborhood Association and Sarah Teare spent another great day with the Ford Thirty Under 30 Fellows as they shared with us their vision for tackling the community aspiration of re-developing the West Willow Community Resource Center.

University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders participants helped at We the People Opportunity Center’s farm, gave out Sugarbrook t-shirts to residents, did landscaping at St. Mark Lutheran Church and Grace Fellowship Church, and cleaned up trash at Sugarbrook Park.

Volunteers from Barton Mallow worked on Jamie’s home inSugarbrook. Achievements of the day included cleaning gutters, installing gutter guards, stainingdecks, removing weeds and planting flowers, and even jump-starting Jamie’s lawnmower with one of the volunteers’ cars!

Kids from Little Caesars AAA hockey team came to Sugarbrook with their parents to help two residents of Sugarbrook. They removed weeds from their yards and planted flowers for them. Most importantly, the kids had a lot of fun and the residents were very happy for their kindness!

Ypsilanti SportPort sports equipment sharing program launch in partnership with Community Family Life Center, Project Play Southeast Michigan, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, and the YMCA of Ann Arbor. Ypsilanti area residents can visit Community Family Life Center in Sugarbrook to borrow sports equipment, such as volleyballs, footballs, hurdles, basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs/softballs and gloves, for free on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Sugarbrook Action Teams continue to meet regularly and are working on neighborhood activities. If you live in Sugarbrook or are a community partner working in Sugarbrook, we encourage you to join an
action team. Please contact Ceara at Habitat for more information at or 734-478-0250.

The Amenities Action Team assisted in the installation of two Little Free Libraries in Sugarbrook (see below) and are helping residents with the process of bringing speed calming measures (such as speedbumps) to Andrea and Foley Streets.

Kettering Action Team

The students from the University of Michigan School of Social Work are researching methods by which community members in other neighborhoods across the US have obtained ownership or oversight of vacant property in their neighborhoods. Habitat International has provided some leads on communities that have undertaken similar projects. The students are also developing a matrix of different funding sources that could potentially fund projects that Sugarbrook residents have listed as priorities for this 10-acre parcel of vacant land where Kettering Elementary School used to be located.

Neighbor Relations Action Team

The Neighbor Relations Action Team created a team logo and organized a hugely successful Sugarbrook (End of) Summer Bash. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for sponsoring this event as part of their Building on Faith activities for the year.

The Team also supported the Sugarbrook Halloween Party and Trunk or Treat organized at Saint Mark Lutheran Church.
