A permit for signs requires a Building Permit Application found on the Building Permits, Applications, & Forms page.
Signs allowed without a permit:
- Directional signs less than or equal to four (4) square feet (one (1) for each public entrance from a collector/arterial street: up to a maximum of two (2) per zoning lot/development).
- Flags bearing national, state, municipal, educational institution or organization as approved by the building official.
- Nameplates less than or equal to two (2) square feet.
- Temporary special event signs up to 30 days per year (cannot be in right-of-way, may be up to ten (10) percent of the front face area of the building).
Prohibited Signs:
- String lights, LED tube/string lights used in connection with a business
- Portable or swinging signs
- Signs on trees, utility poles, benches or private property
- Signs with obscene material or distracting terms (“stop,” “look,” or “danger”)
- Signs in right of way
- Signs with flashing, noise, moving lights, varying light intensity, animation, excessive brightness, images displayed for less than ten (10) seconds, fading or scrolling between messages
- Illuminated signs without a permit
- Non-illuminated window signs occupying more than twenty (20) percent of all windows or with more than two (2) signs per window
- Signs that advertise products/services not provided on site
- Temporary special event signs (banner signs) displayed for longer than thirty (30) days per year
- Damaged or illegal signs
