Art Exploration

Colored PencilsScribbling with John Smolko

Scribbles are the first marks we make as children and are accomplished effortlessly. John reintroduces scribbling to the process of creating art and challenges the participants to experiment with mark making. Students who successfully complete this challenging workshop will understand the Qualities of Line including the power of Expressive Line. This experience and knowledge will enable them to further explore the limitless possibilities of linear art on their own.

Supply list: Prismacolor Pencils; Ruler (12-18 inches); Pencil Sharpener; Drawing board to work on; Mi-tientes (Canson) "Neutral" color paper - 2 sheets
Optional Supply list: Museum Mat Board - neutral color; Prismacolor Art Stixs; Stabilo 3 in 1 Woody Colored Pencils; Erasers

Evening Critique & Studio Time

This class has two objectives: Learn how to analyze a work of art and how to use this knowledge to benefit one's art. Students will bring in work for the critique discussion. These may be finished pieces or works in progress. The group will analyze the pieces and artists will leave with a better understanding of how to improve their work and how to analyze other pieces. This is a skill that all artists need to master. There may be time to work on pieces in class and ask for feedback.

Color Theory

Class will cover the most important aspects of color theory as it relates to students' own art works. The focus will be on pigment characteristics, color mixing, and how to use this information to create dynamic, harmonious, and meaningful color choices in ones work. Students will need professional grade watercolor, color pencils, or pastels to experiment with in class.

Exploration of Art  (Grades K - 2)

Students will spend an hour exploring color, form, texture, and pattern with different art media from painting with tempera, drawing with color pencils to creating with pastels. Each week will be a different adventure in the art world. All projects created for this age group by Tina Hotchkiss. Instructor Tina will provide all supplies.

Intro to Pastels with Carolyn Weins

Designed for the beginner in pastels, students at all levels are welcome. We will explore the variety of pastels, papers, and techniques through hands-on experimenting, demonstrations, and working on a project. Pastels are messy, so dress accordingly. Students may want to bring a snack or bag lunch. If you have pastel supplies, bring them. The materials fee will cover all materials used in the workshop.

WatercolorWatercolor Basics & Beyond - Colored Pencil

This fun, relaxing step-by-step class is appropriate for the beginner and intermediate artist. Students will master many watercolor techniques used by professional artists. A list of supplies will be given at the first class.

Multimedia Art (Ages 8+ years)

This fun-filled six week class will focus on giving students an opportunity to experiment with various media including watercolor, oil and soft pastels, acrylic, and ink. All projects are developed for this age group and gives each child creative time to add their own flare as they are learning techniques used by professional artists. Class will include demos from the instructor Tina Hotchkiss, and plenty of time for students to create. Supplies provided by the instructor.

Shape, One of the Elements of Art

Students will study positive and negative shapes. Projects will include graphite, ink, and charcoal drawings that focus only on positive and negative shapes of still life displays.

Travis Erby Portrait Drawing Class

To draw a portrait one must understand how to draw the human head. In this class, students will learn many features about this complex shape, such as movement, proportion, structure, anatomy, and many more. The students will master the skills needed to draw the human head. Supplies to bring are a sketchpad and a pencil to the first class.

Working Studio

Come join other artist for this time of creativity. One may choose to draw or paint the still life that will be provided, or work on their own project. Time will be given for group critiques and individual help from the instructor, Tina Hotchkiss. Participants will provide their own supplies and lunch.

PastelsDrawing with Soft Pastels

Learn the fundamentals of drawing with pastels in a fun, relaxing atmosphere. Class will include instructional demos, time for students to practice skills, and instructor's feedback on work. Supplies students will bring to class are: professional grade soft pastels; if beginner: a set of Nupastel by Prismacolor, and Canson MI-tents pastel paper or pastel sanded paper.
