Debbie SwansonElected as a Trustee in 2020

Debbie Swanson is serving her first term as an elected trustee. She looks forward to serving Ypsilanti Township in a new way. She is grateful for the trust residents have placed in her. Debbie believes that Ypsilanti Township's greatest assets are the people who make up our community. People care about their neighbors and their neighborhoods. People work hard and stand up for the things they value. One of her top priorities is finding ways to engage with the community and using the collective strength of the hearts and minds of the people who live in Ypsilanti Township to make us a stronger, more supportive, and empathetic community where thriving means we all have a voice, we listen to each other, and our community works for the betterment of everyone who lives in Ypsilanti Township.

Debbie appreciates the hard work and dedication of township employees and understands they represent the heart of township government and they are a critical part of addressing the needs of our residents. She looks forward to supporting and working with township employees to meet the needs of residents.

Previously, she served for 20 years as an elected Ypsilanti Township Park Commissioner. She served as a past vice chair of the park commission and many years as the park commission's secretary preparing park commission minutes and annual reports. She is most proud of the improvements that were made in many of our community and neighborhood parks during her years on the commission. She grew up playing in many of the parks that have seen improvements and is delighted that the parks have been updated for the enjoyment of our residents. She is also proud of the park commission's progress clarifying and in some cases creating polices that allow consistency in the processing of park commission responsibilities and park commission business.

Debbie is a life long resident of Ypsilanti Township. She is a graduate of both Michigan State University (BA Education) and Eastern Michigan University (MA K-12 Curriculum and Instruction). She has 35 years of experience dedicated to the education of youth in our community by serving students and families as a teacher in Willow Run Community Schools and now in Ypsilanti Community Schools after the consolidation of school districts took place. She is grateful for the many relationships she has built over the years with colleagues, students, families, and community partners. Her experience working with students and families has been instrumental in her desire to advocate for residents beyond the classroom. She is passionate about nurturing a strong, healthy, equitable community for all residents. She believes in cooperation, compassion, and social justice.

Debbie and her husband Mark are small business owners. They frequently volunteer and participate in many local community events. They have one adult daughter. The whole family loves spending time in our local community parks and places for recreation.
