Fireworks Permitted

Ypsilanti Township Reminders
Monday, June 29, 2020 11:00 am - Saturday, July 4, 2020 11:45 pm

Consumer fireworks are readily available in Michigan and have become a popular way to celebrate holidays. However, the use of consumer fireworks comes with great responsibility that should be taken seriously. Ypsilanti Township has restricted the use of fireworks to the absolute minimum allowed by state law. Despite those restrictions, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office receives a high volume of fireworks complaints on a regular basis. Most violations are for setting them off on days not permitted or after midnight.

Residents are respectfully asked to follow all safety rules and legal requirements when igniting fireworks in neighborhoods. Please be respectful of others in your neighborhood who may be adversely affected by long periods of loud explosions from fireworks displays.

Here are state law and Township Ordinance regulations for Independence Day:

1. The discharge of novelties, low-impact fireworks and consumer fireworks are permitted Monday, June 29, 2020 - Saturday, July 4, 2020, from 11:00am - 11:45pm.

2. Consumer fireworks shall not be ignited or discharged on public property, school property, church property, or property of another person without that organization’s or person’s written permission to use consumer fireworks on the premises.

3. Minors shall be prohibited from possessing, using, igniting or discharging consumer fireworks.

4. No person shall use low-impact or consumer fireworks while under the influence of alcoholic liquor or a controlled substance or both.

Unlawful use of fireworks can be reported to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office nonemergency number (734) 994-2911. Emergencies including injuries and fires due to fireworks explosions should be reported using 9-1-1. Violators are subject to a civil infraction punishable by a fine of $1,000 for each occurrence. Thank you for your cooperation!

Happy 4th of July!
