Welcome to the Charter Township of Ypsilanti!

Located on the eastern edge of Washtenaw County, Ypsilanti Township is home to over 55,000 residents and covers just under 32 miles. Ypsilanti Township or “Ytown” prides itself on having a rich mix of unique neighborhoods and serene parkland. The Ypsilanti Township Park System contains over 30 parks and nature areas that include community parks, neighborhood parks, four golf courses, and a recreation/community center.

Due to its prime location with a proximity to local expressways, airports, and educational systems, Ypsilanti Township will continue to be at the forefront of economic development. YTown is only a short drive away from the vibrant, bustling downtowns of Ann Arbor, Detroit, the City of Ypsilanti, and the historical treasure that is Depot Town. Ytown is home to three K-12 school districts as well as four higher educational institutions that are just minutes away, which include: Concordia University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Michigan, and Washtenaw Community College.

Founded in 1827, Ypsilanti Township has always been a hardworking and diverse community. Due to its diversity in population and land use, our township must be adaptable to find solutions in helping us move towards the future. The building and operation of the Willow Run Bomber Plant in 1943 to help the war effort, led by Rosie the Riveter, was one of those solutions. Rosie the Riveter and her message of stepping up and getting the job done, which has become a symbol for Ytown, still resonates with our residents today. In 2018, once again the community adapted and found a solution to the re-use of the 300 acre industrial site with the opening of the American Center for Mobility Technology Park, which is the premier research and testing laboratory for connected and automated vehicles in the United States.

An elected seven member Board of Trustees governs Ypsilanti Township. The Supervisor, Clerk and Treasurer are full-time administrators that manage the day-to-day operations of the community; four Trustees serve part-time on the Board. All Board Members are elected at-large and play an important role in setting policy to protect the community’s health, safety and welfare, and manage the financial well-being of our community. Through strategic partnerships with local organizations, the Township’s Board continues its commitment to infrastructure improvements and the expansion of recreational offerings. This is highlighted by our brand new skate park built in September 2020 and turning the historical Willow Run Bomber Plant into a museum, preserving our rich history!

The Township employs approximately 100 full-time employees, as well as several part-time and seasonal employees to staff the various departments that comprise our organizational structure. We also have a contract with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office for police services, our own fire department, a district court, and a water & sewer department all within our YTown community! We are proud of the services that our employees provide to residents and businesses. We encourage you to explore our website to learn more about everything that YTown has to offer and know that “Placing Residents First” is our motto!
