Fire experts agree that people may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a burning home before it's too late.

Many Americans have a false sense of security about surviving a fire.

62% mistakenly believe that they have at least five minutes or more to escape a burning home - more than twice as long as they really may.

18% mistakenly believe they have 10 minutes or more to escape.

69% of parents believe their children would know what to do or how to escape with little help.

52% of parents with children ages 3 - 17 have not talked to their families about fire safety.

70% of families with children have not identified a safe place to meet outside the home. 82% have not practiced home fire drills.

Important steps for a successful fire safety escape plan:

1. Make an escape plan.

2. Make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home.

3. Practice your escape plan and check your escape time.
