On Monday, April 2, 2018, the Contractor for the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will CLOSE Harris Rd between Michigan Ave and Holmes Rd in Ypsilanti Township for the Harris Road Reconstruction Project. The two-lane roadway will be reconstructed including bike lanes, concrete curb, driveways, sidewalk, street lights, rain gardens, storm sewer, and water main.

Update May 8, 2018 - Water main has been installed between Michigan Ave and Forest Ave. The next step is to connect the existing water system to the new main and it will take them at least a week to complete.

If your water service will be impacted, you will be contacted by a representative from OHM Advisors, the YCUA or Bailey Excavating in advance of your water service being connected to the new system. Residents can expect a brief water outage during this changeover and they will be notified in advance of when this outage will take place.

Update June 11, 2018 - As the storm sewer work continues, WCRC will mill away the pavement of the Harris Road and start the earthwork required to build the road base. These are the first steps in the pavement reconstruction process. People who live within the work zone will still have access to their residence but there may be delays as the crews are working.

Update July 12, 2018 - It’s already been a busy July on Harris Road; we’ve completed all the underground utility work and Bailey Excavating, our project contractor, will continue to work on concrete sidewalks, gutters, curbs, and driveways, while also preparing the road for paving.

Update August 23, 2018 - On Monday, August 27, 2018, our contractor will begin asphalt paving on Harris Road between Michigan Avenue and Holmes Road. They will be placing three layers of asphalt, the first two layers, also known as the “base” and “leveling course” will be placed next week.

After those layers have been placed, we have some additional non-asphalt work to complete before we can come in with the final, “top course” of asphalt. Another email update will be sent before this last layer is applied. Once completed, our contractor will then install pavement markings, completing the road work.

Update September 5, 2018 - Many projects on county roads in Washtenaw County are on hold due to a labor dispute between the Michigan Infrastructure Transportation Association (MITA) and the Operating Engineer’s Local 324. The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is not a party to these negotiations.

This work stoppage halts all paving, some earthwork and underground work done by contractors on county roads. Some bridge work may also be impacted, depending on the contractor. This includes Harris Road reconstruction between Michigan Avenue (US-12) and Holmes Road in Ypsilanti Township. It will remain the contractor’s responsibility to keep work zones safe for the traveling public.

Update September 28, 2018 - The labor dispute that has halted work on Harris Road for the past three weeks has come to a temporary resolution. Paving on Harris Road between Michigan Avenue and Holmes Road is scheduled to resume sometime in the next week. Once paving has been completed, the road will be reopened to all traffic. Thank you for your patience during this unusual time.

During paving, residents and property owners, who live or work internal to the project limits, will be provided access to their home or business but drivers should expect delays. We expect all work to be completed by mid-September.

Please be advised that due to weather conditions, all dates are tentative and subject to change. The road will be closed to all through-traffic during construction. This includes the closure of all intersections such as Forest Ave.
