Youth Fitness & Sports

Our Sports Philosophy

Ypsilanti Township Recreation youth sports are designed to teach the basic rules of each sport, fundamentals, sportsmanship, fitness, and how to work together as a team. We allow each and every participant equal playing time and the opportunity to participate. Parents must make a serious effort to take an active role in the youth sports experience of their child by providing positive support as a spectator or coach. It is the parents responsibility to set a good example by demonstrating good sportsmanship and working with the coach to make it a great learning experience for their youth. All youth sports are geared toward recreation instead of competition. This helps us to focus more on having fun and less on whether or not they win or lose.

The Recreation Department is always in need of coaches and volunteers who will continually act as mentors, role models, and facilitators, guiding and encouraging participants on basic skills, rules, fundamentals, team play, sportsmanship, safety and FUN. If you are interested in coaching a sport, please contact the Recreation Department.

Placement on Teams/Waiting List

Young athletes are placed on age appropriate teams based on the neighborhood they live in and/or the school they attend. Registrations received after the deadline will be placed on a wait list. Late registrations will be placed on teams with the lowest number of players in order to fill team rosters. If an age group is full, players will be placed when someone drops from a team.

Practice Times & Game Times

Due to the high number of participants and different age groups registered for each of our sports leagues, the number of teams formed, the amount and availability of athletic facilities we have and the availability of our volunteer coaches, we cannot guarantee a specific time, day or location for practices or games. Each program lists a range of times, dates and sometimes locations for practices and games. Every child placed on a team can expect to have their practices and games scheduled within this range. Please review your schedules prior to signing up your child for any of our programs. Each team will practice one or two evenings during the week. Coaches will contact players with practice times. You will receive a game schedule from your coach.

Wanted: Coaches and Volunteers!

The success of our sports programs is based on the many volunteer coaches needed to guide and teach our children. If you have a special talent and/or skill and if you enjoy sharing your time and energy with others, give us a call at (734) 544 - 3808. We provide training for all of our coaches and volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the children of our community.
