WCRC Snow Maintenance & FAQs

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is responsible for winter maintenance on 1,649 miles of county roads and 581 lane miles of state highways and expressway. Winter maintenance activities include applying salt and sand, as well as plowing snow on roadways and shoulders. With few exceptions, WCRC conducts winter maintenance on public roads located outside of cities and village limits. Cities and villages provide winter maintenance with their own workforces.

Which Roads Are Plowed First?

Washtenaw County Road Commission clears county roads and highways according to a priority system. Paved county roads have been added as a number one priority, in addition to state trunkline/highways.

The priorities primarily have been established based on traffic volumes, location and road classification.

Priority 1 – Paved County Roads, I-94, US-23, M-14, and US-12 between I-94 and M-52
Priority 2 – M-52, M-153, M-17, BR-12, and US-12 between I-94 and Wayne County
Priority 3 – Subdivision Roads
Priority 4 – Gravel Roads

If another storm starts before clean up on priority routes #3 and #4 have been completed, crews will return to priority #1 and #2.

Mailboxes

Mailboxes are sometimes knocked down by road commission trucks when plowing snow. The Commission's policy is to replace mailboxes that have actually been hit by the snow plow; however, if the mailbox or wooden post was broken off from the force of the snow coming off the plow blade, we do not replace or repair it. Please call the WCRC office and they will check into the problem.

Every year in October, Michigan encourages residents to shake their mailbox to make sure it’s winter-ready. Residents should prepare mailboxes for winter by tightening screws and ensuring the post and receptacle are secure enough to endure large amounts of thrown snow. If the mailbox moves when shaken, it may not withstand standard snow removal operations and should be repaired or replaced before winter.
